College age students are at high risk of being identity theft victims. While the most common form of identity theft is generally credit card fraud, "modern identity thieves can utilize your utility bills, school registration forms, even those "pre-approved" credit card offers that are so casually tossed into the trash can." The thief simply takes those offers and manually changes the address on the reply form and returns it. Dumpster diving is a favorate method of gaining the victim's personal information or offer forms. So anything that has your personal information on it or a account name or number on it should be shredded before being thrown away. That includes all those pre-approved credit card or loan offers. Cheap shredders can be purchased at your local office supply store, such as Staples or Office Depot.
